In this role you will be a member of the Mechanical and Product Design Team within the Engineering Department. You will participate in work on lifecycle and new product development products. This would include the following duties:
Supporting mechanical product development/design activities such as:
Assisting in design projects for products, accessories, packaging, programmers and test equipment;
Creating and updating engineering 2D & 3D drawings;
Working with suppliers to share design information and obtain sample components;
The creation of BOMs and information packs for production purposes;
Developing and presenting concept ideas;
Making computer renderings with Keyshot;
Physically making models or prototypes, assembling test units and building test rigs;
Conducting the testing of products, sub-assemblies and components for reliability, function, usability and performance;
Documenting test findings, finding solutions to test issues and presenting feedback to the Engineering team;
Assisting other team members as required.
Writing and designing user manuals, requiring:
Writing text for user instructions;
Laying out text and diagrams within booklets and sheets;
Making sketches & vector illustrations as well as designing icons and graphics for manual diagrams;
Seeking out input and feedback from the various stakeholders within the company and integrating this into the documents.
Supporting the Usability team:
Evaluating designs of physical product, software or apps, and identifying feedback on design changes for improved usability;
Participating in usability activities and user testing;
Participating in off-site observations at places such as animal shelters, or testers’ homes;
Assisting in the recruitment of participants for user studies;
Conducting bug and desktop testing of products, app and systems.
Hand sketching and rendering for sharing and developing ideas;
Creation of 2D technical drawings to industry standard such as BS8888;
Basic workshop, modelmaking and mechanical assembly skills;
An appreciation of usability and thinking from the end-user’s perspective;
Interviewing techniques for user studies and research;
Possessing a methodical and structured working approach;
Ability to work independently and manage own workload;
Aptitude to team working and communicating in a fast paced environment;
Education Minimum Requirements
2:1 or above, Undergraduate degree in Product Design Engineering, Product Design, Industrial Design, or related subject.
Required Experience & Skills
Minimum 2 years’ experience working in the development of consumer products or a related industry sector;
Confident user of Solidworks 3D CAD & PDM;
Ability to make computer renderings of products with Keyshot;
Competence with Adobe InDesign and Illustrator;
A good level of English grammar and spelling, for use in user manuals and documentation.
Preferred Experience & Skills
Knowledge of the basic principles for design for injection molding;
Demonstrable knowledge of rapid prototyping techniques and technologies;
