The role and responsibilities:

As an Industrial Design Engineer you will be a key member of the Mechanical and Industrial Design team, using your creative skills to define and develop the usability, aesthetic and functional aspects of products from concept to manufacture. You will have excellent sketching, illustration and visualisation skills and will use these to present concepts and ideas to internal teams and external clients at all stages of the product development life cycle. You will also have a good understanding of engineering principles, practices and manufacturing processes meaning that you are able to design products to stringent performance, cost, assembly and manufacturing requirements. You will have excellent time management skills and will be able to balance your workload over multiple projects and deliver design work to tight timescales.

Our projects demand creative solutions to difficult engineering challenges in the medical, diagnostic, laboratory, consumer and food and drink industries. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of delivering designs and projects in these sectors, and will preferably have worked within an ISO 13485 quality management system, as well as to standards applicable to relevant projects.

In addition to product design engineering, the role includes significant involvement in Human Factors, user experience and user interface design (UX and UI), marketing and branding. Therefore, skills such as graphic design, document layout, photography and design for print would be advantageous.

Being a consultancy means that all our engineers are client facing and represent the company, so we are seeking someone who is bright, diligent, personable and passionate about design to join our friendly team.

Ideal candidate requirements:

  1. A first or 2:1 honours degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Design Engineering or equivalent.
  2. Excellent skills in, and evidence of, designing creative solutions to complex design challenges as part of a logical design process within a multidisciplinary team.
  3. The ability to demonstrate impeccable attention to detail, thoroughness, pride and passion in your design work. We expect a flair for sketching, both digital and paper based, for conveying ideas, concepts and storyboards quickly and attractively.
  4. Comprehensive experience of 3D CAD, preferably SolidWorks, for solid and surface modelling, 2D engineering drawings and data management (PDM).
  5. High levels of capability and experience in visualisation and rendering software such as Adobe suite (PS, Ai, ID as a minimum), Sketchbook, and Keyshot. You will also have a high level of competency with MS Office software, and possibly other design, UI, analytical or simulation software.
  6. Knowledge of manufacturing processes and engineering practices, including how to design and specify parts for different prototyping and manufacturing techniques, in different production quantities.
  7. Excellent hands-on prototyping, workshop, assembly and testing skills.
  8. Knowledge and experience of designing to physical requirements such as IP ratings, material requirements, stress, strain, shock loading, heat transfer and fluid flow. Ideally you will have experience of designing with compliance to current legislation industry and harmonised standards applicable to the project, eg MDD, IVDD, 14971,13485, 62366, 60529.
  9. Excellent time management, communication and teamworking skills ensuring that you are an active, enthusiastic, and motivating member to internal and external colleagues.
  10. Skills in graphic design, print, layout, typeface and photography will be an advantage.
