Design Engineer at
Oxford Product Design

The Opportunity

Design Engineer

Location: Harwell + flexible home working

Salary: £40-50K depending on experience

About the Role

Working in our design team, you’ll bring your experience of product development to produce innovative designs that meet the specification, delight our clients, are reliable and cost effective to manufacture. If you’re a talented designer with an inquiring mind that is excited by the challenge of working in a fast paced consultancy environment then you’ll fit right in. Working collaboratively and building strong relationships with colleagues and clients is key to our success, but it’s also important that you can work independently and autonomously as well.

The consultancy environment will give you experience in a wide and diverse variety of work, allowing you to develop your technical skills and widen your commercial experience. You’ll find yourself working on all sorts of things – there really is no such thing as a typical week at OPD. What we can be sure of though is that you’ll get challenging problems to solve and be part of a skilled and friendly team who will support you along the way.

Our team of innovators are curious, experimental, creative and passionate. But our pragmatic, precise approach and highly technical expertise mean that manufacturability and risk management are at the core of everything we do. Each of our clients benefit from our shared passion and combined knowledge, and we bring together decades of experience across disciplines - from industrial design to mechanical engineering, electronics engineering, prototyping and manufacture.

About You

· A technically savvy, creative problem solver with a meticulous and methodical approach to the details of the design.

· Clear and confident communicator with a preference for pictures over words

· Strong 3D CAD skills (preferably SolidWorks)

· Degree qualified in mechanical engineering or related discipline

· Experienced and capable at building relationships with clients and suppliers

· Several years of demonstrable experience in product development, preferably within a consultancy environment

· Motivation towards the application of human factors to product development

· Experience of bringing at least one product to market successfully

About Us

Making things better by making better things – as Designers that’s what makes us tick.

At Oxford Product Design we are professional problem solvers, working with both start-ups on groundbreaking new ideas, as well as some of the world’s leading brands on category-defining products that improve how we humans live and work.

Our design studio is based in a historic Cherry Barn in Harwell and has plenty of on-site parking. The studio is easily commutable by bus and train. We find our creative juices flow best when we’re in the studio together, but depending on what you are doing on any particular day, we also offer the flexibility to work from home.

We offer a competitive salary, pension and bonus scheme. You’ll get 25 days holiday (plus bank holidays) and paid leave on your birthday, wedding day, or if you’re buying a house or taking your child for their first day at school. You can purchase another 5 days of holiday a year, spread across 12 months, or sell back holiday at any point. After 3 years of working at OPD you can apply for an unpaid sabbatical of up to 3 months, increasing to 6 months after 6 years.

You’ll be allocated ten days of training per year, with a training budget of up to 5% of your annual salary. We’re a member of the cycle to work scheme which allows you to purchase a bike and related accessories tax free, we offer season ticket loans and have an Employee Assistance Programme for you and your family. And if you’re in the office on a Thursday, we’ll buy lunch for you!
