Overview

The Industrial Designer will join the Experience Design team, a cross-functional design team of UX, visual and industrial designers. We focus entirely on Ottava, J&J’s new surgical robotic platform that is in development and will offer unrivaled flexibility and control. Featuring six arms that are integrated into the operating table, this platform is primed to change health outcomes across a broad range of disease states. To deliver on this mission, our team is deeply embedded and partners closely with marketing, clinical engineering, SW and systems engineering, and human factors.

We are looking for a highly motived team player who is passionate about Industrial Design excellence and will support the team on a range of projects from concept development through manufacturing support. You will be involved in user testing, cross-functional reviews, and more broadly gain exposure to many facets of the team and J&J to enhance physician capabilities, reduce the invasiveness of procedures, and create new categories of care that redefine optimal patient outcomes.

Some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Supercharge design activities by supporting the team through sketching, rendering, CAD and prototyping
  • Support user studies with prototypes that are thoughtfully designed to elicit high quality user feedback
  • Collaborate closely with Industrial Designers, Mechanical Engineers and Clinical Engineers to turn complex technologies into thoughtful and beautiful end user experiences
  • Build compelling visuals and presentations to communicate design to peers, top leadership and users

Key Qualifications:

  • Industrial Design degree (or similar) with a minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience is required.
  • A strong portfolio of work (PDF or link to website) is required.
  • Solidworks (an absolute requirement)
  • Strong visualization skills in Adobe Creative Suite and Keyshot is required.
  • Experience with prototyping (3D Printing, CNC, Metal/Wood/Foam Fabrication) is required.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills are required.

Ideal Qualifications

  • Experience with guiding projects through design for manufacturing
  • Understanding of CMF selections to meet technical and brand requirements
  • Experience working on medical devices
