Industrial Designer (with strong creative and CAD skills) at 4Design

The Opportunity


The Job  

We are looking for a qualified industrial designer with a creative mind and the skills to match. You will join 4design's team of designers and engineers working on some very exciting and forward thinking projects.

This is a role for someone who enjoys problem solving and working through the design process from sketch to CAD and beyond. You will work across a variety of projects, small and large, with the ability to work closely with our team, our clients and our contractors.

You will have access to 'Industry Best' CAD and presentation software, high quality 3D Printing and a comprehensive studio including prototype workshop. You will be located at our central Sydney studio and working within a very creative environment. As we are based in Sydney you will need to be Sydney based or available to start work in Sydney by no later than January 2019.


We would prefer 5 years minimum and this must be in an Industrial design role. You will need to have been involved at the front end of projects, sketching concepts and resolving details independently and in a group environment. Presenting concepts via sketching and computer aided presentation as well as rendering should be a breeze.

We would expect that you have been exposed to a wide variety of manufacture techniques, technologies and materials and you will be comfortable designing products that can be manufactured. You should have great communication skills and be comfortable liaising with contractors and participating in client meetings. You should have a strong sense of design style based on experience and be able to communicate your ideas via sketch, CAD and Rendering.


Solidworks experience is mandatory with at least 5 years or if not a very comprehensive understanding of the program. Surfacing skills are essential and it would be beneficial if you are familiar with NX.

Adobe, competency in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign is essential.

Other preferred skills should include the following -

  • Rendering and animation, you should be across multiple platforms and be able to produce both quick sketch renders and highly detailed renders and animations.
  • Experienced with plastic injection moulded, metal pressing and folding processes.
  • Experienced with researching and sourcing materials and processes to validate design proposals and deliver fully resolved products.
  • Competent in a workshop environment preparing visual models and prototype assembly.
  • Be well presented and comfortable participating in client meetings and liaison.
  • Capable of working to budget and deadline as well as maintain BOMs and project documentation.
  • Able to work independently on assigned tasks or within a team on shared projects.
  • Sensitivity to contemporary design trends and interpret these appropriately within your work.

Our in-house prototyping machine shop and high end 3D printer allows us to be intimately involved in the design process. This relationship between design and manufacture is integral to the 4DESIGN service and capability.
