We are seeking a principal level Industrial Designer to join our Sonos Industrial Design team. Designing at Sonos requires balancing a deep sense of collaboration with a strong desire to learn. As an integral part of the Sonos Design team, you will help us execute our philosophy of calm technology and build a portfolio of products that improve people’s lives through amazing audio experience.
As a Principal Designer, you will lead the creative design effort on projects from early concept to production through design and consumer research, competitive marketplace analysis, industrial design concept exploration, refinement, communication, & documentation. You will work cross-functionally with internal creative and technical teams, and external manufacturing partners to help deliver the highest quality experience and design possible, while also ensuring that design integrity is maintained from concept to mass production.
This role can be based at one of our hub offices in Santa Barbara, Boston, Seattle or remote.
What You’ll Do:
Lead the creative design effort on projects from early concepting through mass production.
Lead discussions and work that define our Sonos Industrial Design and User Experience.
Navigate across real-world production challenges that touch upon industrial design, interaction design, user research and brand.
Work collaboratively with a growing team of talented designers from multiple creative and technical disciplines.
What You’ll Need:
A BA or BSc / MFA in the field of Industrial Design.
A minimum +10 years of professional experience in a corporate or consulting design environment.
Experience designing, developing, and shipping products for worldwide markets with a particular focus on the area of consumer electronics and/or domestic appliances.
A strong portfolio of previous work, showing design development process and philosophy.
Ability to develop and own design stories and capture these in beautifully crafted presentations.
A high level of knowledge and interest in best practice for product development, manufacturing techniques, and fabrication trends for consumer electronics.
Strong ability to develop and resolve design concepts through hand sketches, mock-ups, and models; from 3D prints to full appearance models to early prototypes.
High proficiency in a 3D modeling software package - Siemens NX, Catia, SolidWorks, Rhino, Alias etc.
High proficiency in creating visualizations using 3D rendering software such as KeyShot or similar.
A strong grasp using 2D design software such as Adobe Creative Suite.
Eye for clean, visually impactful designs that are both current and lasting.
Sensitivity to color, aesthetics, materiality, and the ability to translate trends and culture into compelling products.
Ability to interpret user insights into meaningful product design intent in a way that expresses a high level understanding of form, function, visual composition, and conceptual integrity.
Experience in managing 3rd party vendors
Excellent speaking and writing skills
Detail driven with the ability to think creatively and critically across a range of problem types to ensure that our high level goals are successfully translated into a broad range of product form factors.
Consistency at the portfolio level and flexibility to the context of each product.
Genuine interest in working across problems that touch upon industrial design, interaction design and brand in a manner that reinforces the Sonos design pillars and brand promise.
