The Opportunity

Ethicon’s Robotic & Digital Solutions business is recruiting for an Industrial Designer, located in Santa Clara, CA.

Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices is focused on shaping the future of digital surgery and expanding its robotics and digital solutions offerings across the entire portfolio, with multi-specialty, end-to-end solutions in orthopedics, endoluminal intervention and general surgery. This includes the MONARCH® platform, a first-of-its-kind robotic technology indicated for bronchoscopic visualization of and access to patient airways for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the lung.

You will work on Ottava, Johnson & Johnson\\\'s new surgical robotic system. Upon joining our dedicated team of industrial, UX and visual designers, you will contribute to projects across robotic hardware, surgical instruments and accessories, packaging, and branding. A passionate user-advocate, you constantly strive to blend outstanding usability with memorable design, ultimately delivering a world-class user experience.

Some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Advance design activities via sketching, form exploration, storyboarding, rendering, CAD and prototyping
  • Support user studies with prototypes to elicit high quality user feedback
  • Participate in regular design critique sessions in which we review ongoing work and push each other to make everything better
  • Create compelling visuals and presentations to communicate design to peers, top leadership and users



  • Minimum Bachelors in Industrial Design or equivalent and 1 year of industry experience or relevant work are required
  • High proficiency in Solidworks
  • Strong visualization skills in Illustrator, Photoshop, and Keyshot
  • Experience with prototyping (3D Printing, CNC, Metal/Wood/Foam Fabrication)
  • Clear written and verbal communicator


  • Experience with guiding projects through design for manufacturing
  • Experience working on medical devices


This position may require up to 10% travel.
